We are several weeks into the season of Epiphany moving towards the season of Lent, and we have explored several different vignettes in the life of Jesus. There was Jesus and the Old Testament prophetic tradition, embodied in John the Baptist, as Jesus sanctified the waters of baptism. Jesus and the Devil squared off in the desert as the Messiah resisted temptation on our behalf. And last week, we encountered Jesus and the religious elite of his day as Nicodemus learned what it meant to be born from above. This week, Jesus encounters the “other” in a Samaritan woman as he rests by Jacob’s well. The text says, “He had to go through Samaria,” for there was a divine encounter that needed to take place. Please listen with us as we examine the story of the woman at the well.
