Through the Bible with Poetry: 2 Chronicles
Jon’s thoughts: The shadow of sacrifice still remains.
We are idol factories. We are prone to make substitute gods out of material things and thus give away so much for so little, or nothing. We do the same with sacrifice. We trade broken and contrite hearts for the spectacle of destroying material things and gain little if anything in return. I often wonder what the Biblical narrative might have been like, might be like, had we ditched sacrifice from the very beginning and rent our hearts and not our clothes.
From 2 Chronicles
Sacrifices And Offerings You Have Not Desired
Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings to the Lord.
And yet a thousand more would not do,
When given in due accord.
For You will not delight in sacrifice, or I would surely give.
You will not be pleased with a burnt offering.
Tis a broken heart I need to live.
Lord give me now, knowledge; eyes, to see what it is to be wise.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
A broken and contrite heart you will not despise.
